Created by The American Academy on Communication in Healthcare (AACH) and Drexel University College of Medicine and launched in 2005, DocCom is an online learning resource to teach communication skills for healthcare providers, residents and medical students. This comprehensive resource offers 42 multimedia-rich interactive modules including skills checklists, 400+ videos, evidenced-based recommendations, real-clinician video demonstrations, annotated interactive videos, assignments, assessment questions, grading matrix, resources, faculty syllabi and curriculum guides. Yale New Haven Hospital is a nationally recognized, 1,541-bed, not-for-profit hospital serving as the primary teaching hospital for the Yale School of Medicine. Yale New Haven was founded as the fourth voluntary hospital in the U.S. in 1826 and today, the hospital’s two New Haven-based campuses include Yale New Haven Children's Hospital, Yale New Haven Psychiatric Hospital and Smilow Cancer Hospital. YNHH has a combined medical staff of about 4,500 university and community physicians practicing in more than 100 specialties. YNHH’s York Street campus and associated ambulatory sites are Magnet-designated by the American Nurses Credentialing Center. 

In an era of ever-increasing metrics and accountability, we worked to create a communication skills program that would not only enhance patient experience, but also reconnect our own clinicians to their purpose. The premise of the Center for Excellence in Healthcare Communication is that by providing resources to support our staff, they can more effectively deliver exceptional patient care. We also believe that the relationships we build with each other and our patients are therapeutic in and of themselves, and communication skills are critical to that mission.

The Beryl Institute is the global community of practice dedicated to improving the patient experience through collaboration and shared knowledge.
